Man and van,
anywhere in Essex

The smaller end of the work — a single room, a student move, a flat's worth of furniture, a collection from a seller, or one heavy thing that will not go in a car. Two people and a van, booked by the job.

Not every move needs a Luton and four people. A good share of what we are asked for across the county is smaller: somebody leaving a house share in Colchester, a one-bed above a shop on Southend High Street, a flat at Chelmsford being emptied for a sale.

Man and van covers it — the same crews, the same blankets, the same care with the door frames. A smaller vehicle and a shorter day.

What it suits

  • Flat and bedsit moves inside the county, or out to London and Suffolk
  • Single rooms — a lodger moving on, a teenager moving out
  • Student moves around the Colchester campus and the London commute
  • One awkward item: a sofa, a fridge-freezer, an upright piano, a workshop bench
  • Collections from warehouses, auction rooms and marketplace sellers
  • Clearing a storage unit into a new address

Where it stops making sense

Roughly at a well-filled one-bed. Past that it becomes two trips and a long day, and at that point it is neither cheaper nor quicker than a proper house removal. Describe the load honestly and we will tell you which side of the line you are on — it saves everybody an afternoon.

The Essex distance question

On a small job, travel is a larger share of the total than it is on a house move. Inside a single town it barely registers. A collection in Saffron Walden with a delivery in Canvey is a genuine day's work before anything is lifted. We say so when quoting rather than absorbing it and regretting it.

Access on small jobs

Small loads often come out of the hardest buildings. Converted houses along the Westcliff and Southend seafronts have staircases that turn twice before the first landing. Flats over shops on Chelmsford and Colchester high streets have one narrow door onto a busy pavement.

So we ask the same short list every time: which floor, is there a lift, how wide is the stairwell turn, and where can the van legally stand. Two minutes at booking prevents almost every problem on the day.

Booking

Both addresses, a list or photo of what is going, and the floor at each end. Weekends and month-ends go first; a weekday slot is easier to get and easier to park. If the dates are not settled, storage can bridge the gap — see services, and areas we cover for how the county splits for travel time.

Worth asking

Small-move questions

One person or two?

Two, on anything with furniture in it. One and a van is fine for cartons. It is not fine for a sofa down three flights in Westcliff, and saying otherwise is how furniture and people get damaged.

Will you carry, or just drive?

Carry. That is the job. If you genuinely only want a vehicle and a driver while you do the lifting, say so and we will price it that way — but it is not what most people mean when they ask.

Do you do single items?

Yes. A wardrobe from Colchester to Chelmsford, a sofa bought off a marketplace listing, an upright piano across town. Send a photo and both addresses and we will tell you what it needs.

Can you do a student move?

Regularly. The Colchester campus makes late June and September the busy weeks, and they book out. Book ahead if you can.

Does the county distance affect a small job?

More than on a big one, proportionally. A short hop inside a town is cheap. Collecting in Saffron Walden and delivering in Southend is most of a day, and we price it as one rather than pretending otherwise.

Next step

Got a small move on?

Two addresses, the floor at each end, and a rough list of what is going. We will tell you what it needs and what it costs, in writing.
